What sparked the idea for your business, and what motivated you to dive into this industry?

I’ve always been interested in houses and had a background in project management, where I consulted on improving business processes. But what really pushed me into this industry was seeing how broken the business model was - architects and builders working in silos just didn’t make sense. I wanted to bridge that gap and create something better. So, I teamed up with my brother-in-law and two friends, and we’ve been running Box for 15 years now.

We’ve loved our journey so far, and while the industry has grown more complex and layered, it’s given us the opportunity to excel at what we do best. The increasing demands and costs have only reinforced the importance of smooth coordination between builders and architects - something we’ve mastered by bridging the gap and bringing both design and construction under one roof. We’ve managed to create a unique business model that ensures everything runs smoothly and no detail is overlooked - its been the key to our success.

How has working with Evolve Accounting made a difference to your business?

We’ve had the pleasure of working with Sarah and Anthony since 2011, and they’ve been fundamental to our growth and success. Their industry knowledge has helped us understand crucial aspects like working capital, work in progress, and the importance of having solid financial structures and reporting in place. From day one, Evolve Accounting has ingrained in us the value of good processes, systems, and controls.

What advice would you give to other business owners about finding a good accountant and why it’s important?

The lifeblood of any business is cash, so it’s really important to understand your cash position on a regular basis. You can’t make big business decisions without that clarity. Too often, business owners make assumptions and overlook the realities of their cash flow. When you’re trying to grow your business, knowing exactly where you stand is essential.

A good accountant will help you understand how fast you can grow, where to deploy your equity, and how much equity you actually have available. Additionally, they should have a deep understanding of the dynamics of your industry, which can make all the difference in navigating challenges and seizing opportunities.

What do you value most about working with Evolve Accounting?

The people. They are exceptionally skilled at what they do, but what really stands out is how approachable and relatable they are. They don’t fit the stereotypical accountant mould; instead, they feel like an integral part of our team. Having a clear picture of our financial health has been transformative for our planning and growth strategies. Every business owner has a different appetite for risk, and understanding our financial position has given us the confidence to invest in opportunities when we want to. We know that you can’t make informed decisions without knowing what your working capital looks like.

What’s next for Box?

We’re focusing on succession planning and figuring out how to transfer the business to the next generation while building a solid value proposition. We understand that the landscape is always changing, so we’re committed to diversification. Recently, we acquired a concrete pool business which nicely complements our service offering. We’re also exploring opportunities in property tech to ensure that we adapt and grow in ways that align with our vision for the future.
